Abstract: In this article I will attempt to investigate the meaning of the maschalismos of Agamemnon, (A. Cho. 439; S. El. 445) by placing it in relationship with the praxis of the oath-sacrifice. It is well known that the most solemn oath-sacrifices consisted of animal mutilation with the conditional self-curse: the dismembered animals became the image of the dire effects on the perjure. The theme of the broken oath concerned the impious praxis of the Atreides and was quoted several times in Agamemnon of Aeschylus. The Erinyes and Horkos, with their terrible punishments are the actual inhabitants of the house of the Atreides, who have always broken their solemn oaths. The murder of Agamemnon is compared explicitly to an animal sacrifice and indeed also the mutilation of his body belongs to this symbolic context. Relating the maschalismos of Agamemnon to the perjury of an oath-sacrifice makes it possible to go beyond the ancient explanations, often contradictory, and to see in the dire fate of the Achaean king a case of an achieved self-curse. Furthermore, also the difficult fragment of Callimachus’ Iambi (X, 200 b Pf.), in which Agamemnon sacrificed mutilated animals, can be likely understood as an oath-sacrifice.
