Abstract : Bronze Age boat models are known in the Aegean from a variety of contexts (i.e. domestic, cultic, and funerary). And although there is a great number of such finds whose context is either unknown or inadequately investigated, those with substantial contextual information can be analysed in order for the symbolic significance of the objects, and even the motivations behind their treatment and disposal, to be better understood. In this study, thirteen known boat models are contextually analysed, and on the basis of both their morphological characteristics, as these are exhibited by their physical remains, and their contextual information, their symbolic significance is explored. The prophylactic attribute of these objects is suggested, while it is argued that although the models’ treatment and disposal did not constitute a uniform praxis, their symbolic significance was nevertheless uniform, and would have derived from their full-sized counterparts.
