Abstract: The present paper aims at contributing to the interpretation of archaic Hera’s cult and wooden boat offerings at her oldest Greek sanctuary located at the mouth of the Imvrasos river on the island of Samos by offering new interpretations concerning: a) the identification of the wooden boat model offerings and b) the significance and meaning of these offerings. As far as the wooden models is concerned, it is suggested that not all of these represent ships as it is currently believed, but rather a specific boat type, while their, as well as all the other offerings’, significance may indicate the fact that as patron deity of the island, archaic Hera, is operating close to her worshippers in their major concern, oikos, signifying the dwelling-place, the human group inhabiting it, and its property (house and family, fishing-boats and fishes, merchant vessels and trade goods), which she protects as a whole.

Résume: Le présent article vise à contribuer à l’interprétation du culte d’Héra archaïque et des offrandes en forme de modèles réduits de bateaux en bois dans son sanctuaire grec le plus ancien situé à l’embouchure de la rivière Imvrasos, sur l’île de Samos, en offrant de nouvelles interprétations concernant : a) l’identification de ces maquettes de bateaux en bois, et b) la signification de ces offrandes. En ce qui concerne les modèles en bois, il est suggéré qu’ils ne représentent pas tous des navires, comme on le croit actuellement, mais que certains représentent plutôt un type de bateau spécifique. Quant à leur signification, y compris celle de toutes les autres offrandes, elle indiquerait que, en tant que divinité patronne de l’île, Héra archaïque opère auprès de ses fidèles dans le cadre de leur souci majeur, l’oikos, signifiant à la fois la demeure, le groupe humain qui l’habite et ses biens (maison et famille, bateaux de pêche et poissons, navires et bateaux marchands et marchandises), qu’elle protège dans son intégralité au sens strict du terme.
