Abstract: This paper analyses Demodocus’ song about the love of Hephaestus and Aphrodite (Od. VIII 267-369) in relation to the occasion on which it is performed. Examining the context of performance allows us to hypothesize that the bard’s song can be considered a hymn to Hephaestus and Aphrodite. Furthermore, its relationship with the main problematic issues of the Odyssey will be explored. First, vv. 256-65 and 370-84, which frame the context of performance, will be analysed, along with v. 429—the only occurrence of the term ὕμνος in Odyssey_—which supports our reading. Second, the passage will be examined in light of hymn structure and possible cultic contexts in which such a hymn might have been performed. Finally, the hymn’s important narrative function within the _Odyssey’s will be assessed.

Résumé : Cet article analyse la chanson de Démodocus sur l’amour d’Héphaïstos et d’Aphrodite (Od. VIII 267-369) en relation avec l’occasion à laquelle elle est interprétée. L’examen du contexte de l’interprétation permet d’émettre l’hypothèse que le chant du barde peut être considéré comme un hymne à Héphaïstos et Aphrodite. De plus, sa relation avec les principales problématiques de l’Odyssée sera explorée. Premièrement, les vv. 256-65 et 370-84, qui encadrent le contexte de la représentation, seront analysés, ainsi que le v. 429 — la seule occurrence du terme ὕμνος dans l’Odyssée — qui conforte notre lecture. Deuxièmement, le passage sera examiné à la lumière de la structure de l’hymne et des contextes sectaires possibles dans lesquels un tel hymne aurait pu être interprété. Enfin, la fonction narrative importante de l’hymne au sein de l’Odyssée sera évaluée.
