Abstract: Athena, like all the deities-protectors of the polis, operates within a vast domain and between multiple spheres of activity and competence. It is not difficult to detect her presence at the heart of the Greek religion and art. The present paper investigates the depictions of the Goddess that emphasize the Athena’s attributes as ‘the definite virtue in state and war’ – Athena Nike, Athena Polias, Athena Sotira, Athena Promachos – and argues that these fundamental attributes have also been the fundamental characteristics of the Greek religious thought, of the artistic perspective, and of the ideological speech of the polis of Athens.
